What you hear is the sound of the constitution being shredded

Today Bush and Ashcroft decided that an American citizen had joined the "enemy" and put him in military custody, where he will probably be tried by a military tribunal. "his access to a lawyer probably will be severely restricted now that he is in military custody" said Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Rivers Johnson.

I suspect that this person probably is terrorist, and that he does belong behind bars, after a fair trial. But if they keep handling him this way I'll never be able to make my own judgement.

What will happen when Bush and Ashcroft decide that I am the enemy? That's ridiculous, I can hear people thinking. Well, we always think that it is ridiculous until it happens. Remember, it was Bush's spokesperson who said  "Americans need to watch what they say and do." This feels like the precursor to a new wave of McCarthyism.

What can we do? I don't know. All that I have thought of so far is the usual stuff. Write your congresscritter and senatecritter. Join the ACLU

Your thoughts welcome.
