Arianna Huffington finally managed to get the ads she has been talking about doing produced, linking our obscene consumption of energy with sponsorship of terrorism, and they are brilliant. They are one sided and unfair in some sense, but they also open a debate that needs to happen -- what cost are we willing to pay for our energy habit?
You can see them online at The Detroit Project site. Check them out. Highly recommended. She also has some great follow up reading.
The next battle is getting the ads shown -- according to the NYT, some stations are refusing to show the ads, and of course they are all demanding top dollar. If you can afford to donate, please do so.
Thanks to Arianna Huffington for having the idea and following up on it. Whether I like it or not, we are a TV based society, and putting stuff on TV is how you get stuff noticed and debated.

What the crud?! SUV's support terrorism? HOLY CRAP! Then the U.S. Military, every car driving American--- in fact, ALL Americans are supporting Terrorism! Oil produces plastic, we need it to power our ships, planes, machines, and every single car out there. You're all stupid. Do you have ADD? Do you require attention? GET A DOG! I support terrorism...I buy oil for my car. My god, DEATH TO AMERICA! REALLY! You're stupid.
Posted by: Matt on February 19, 2003 08:17 AMOne of your dumb ass believers put a sticker on my durango. This is America. Are we not free to decide what we want to drive? I have children my choice was an suv over a van. My durango is new, much cleaner than old cars and trucks on the road today. My husband and I work hard. We pay our taxes and love our neighbors. We donate to those in need as well as helping out in our community.
HOW DARE YOU SAY I SUPPORT TERRORISM!! Maybe you should go live in Irac for awhile and see how far your freedom of speach gets you.
Thankyou so much for defacing my property. Hope you feel better.
I was unaware the SUV's of America are our only form of oil depedancy......IDIOTS!
Posted by: on February 28, 2003 03:39 PMI did find the adds funny, though arguing that SUV's support terrorism is like arguing that Camels support the war on terrorism because Arab's ride them. Wait, that doesn't work. Whatever.

Posted by: Max on May 1, 2003 06:07 AMThere's no argument- a single driver in a 10 mpg vehicle going to the grocery store wastes gas, because for those kinds of tasks, a 30 mpg car would work just as well.
It's all about feeling superior to other drivers.
Don't hide behind "it's a free country... If I can afford the gas...." We routinely restrict water usage during droughts, because in such situations, the threat of running out of water is immediate.
Running out of oil is a problem we can push off on our kids.
Me, Me, Me! Take care of Me! I want a BIG toy!
Morons!
Posted by: anon on May 29, 2003 09:39 PMWe will never drill our way out of our oil-dependency, like it or not, just as we will never build enough lanes on the freeways we drive (mostly) as single occupied in its cab. We need to do something about the gross inequity between our population in this world and our consumption. Do you realize what catastrophies await if everyone else in the world that could afford to live as we do actually did so? Our self-indulgance and worse yet, arrogance about it is what many outside this country resent. If Ms. Huffington can at least give the palest inkling to the rest of us at what we do, then more power to her!
Posted by: anon on June 13, 2003 12:31 PMWhat a load of garbage! I'm a military veteran of 11 years and I've shed blood for this country! This is the land of the free! We are allowed to use oil because we pay for it! Anyone can find some degree of separation between Terrorism and the Pope if they wanted to. Arianna needs to think about what we really stand for and realize that freedom isn't free. My friends died for it, and so would I! They died so she could have the right to insult the people of this great country! Tell the dead 18 year old soldier's mother that they shouldn't drive an SUV that they worked hard for because they're putting food in Osama's mouth! Perhaps the willingness to improve and progress as a powerful nation should suffer and we should send all of our SUV blueprints to Iraq. Hell, they've got plenty of oil! Bitch.
