Fun with maps

I read tonight that Google had finally released a proper API for its map service. I went and looked at it, and realized that even someone as relatively unskilled as I could use it. An hour later, I had my walk to work mapped out. If I can do that in an hour, what will skilled geogeeks like Paul Rademacher, Schuyler Erle or Anselm Hooks be able to do? The mind boggles. Mostly I think it will be cool , as befits my moniker, but then when I think of how government and commercial entities already make use of existing geospacial data, I get nervous. Is the future sunny or dark, or both?
